In many cases the author has no control over the techniques employed by the readers in analyzing his writing.The first step in controlling a sample of an argumentative essay is to develop a good frame of reference. This includes a good frame of reference in terms of topics, goals, and areas of interest. These are sometimes called frames of reference, in that they can serve as 'grounds' upon which to build the arguments or analyses.The second step in controlling a sample of an argumentative essay is to develop an outline which presents the topics as they will appear to the reader. Often it is difficult to achieve good, clear, and meaningful outlines, but it is possible. The outline can also serve as a way of encouraging the author to use only explicit language when presenting material and to restrict the use of metaphor and simile to those situations in which the use of such language is appropriate.The third step in controlling a sample of an argumentative essay is to plan the author's techniques. The plan should not depend on absolute control over every choice the author makes, but on the author's ability to control what the reader may see. In other words, the author must be able to control the results of any analysis that he may make.It is important to realize that the three steps in controlling a sample of an argumentative essay are quite different from one another. For example, if the author can make use of the control of more than one reader to influence what the author writes, then he will have multiple techniques of c ontrol. However, if he has only one reader to control, then he will have control only over the techniques which the reader uses to evaluate the argument.
